A Polar Dream is a captivating tribute to the majesty and interconnectedness of the polar regions, presented in a harmonious composition divided into four quadrants.
The top half of the painting depicts Arctic life: an Arctic Fox gazes across the tundra, a Narwhal’s silhouette glides nearby, and a Polar Bear swims through icy waters alongside the shadow of a reindeer antler. The bottom half transitions to the Antarctic, featuring an Emperor Penguin diving into turquoise ice-cold waters and a graceful Weddell Seal navigating beneath the ice.
Connecting these worlds is the Arctic Tern, migrating across both poles, symbolising the unity of these distant yet intertwined ecosystems. A subliminal black cross subtly anchors the composition, tying the elements together. How was it created?
The artwork begins with collage of sections of selected images, which I carefully compile digitally to establish the theme, composition, and colour palette. Once the concept is refined, I commence painting in oils, focusing initially on the intricate details. After these areas have dried, I adopt a more expressive approach, utilising palette knives and larger brushes to develop the abstract elements. Once the painting has dried, I mask off key areas and, with a wide brush loaded with oil paint, apply a decisive central stroke. This final step is a critical moment in the process, requiring precision and confidence, as any mistake could compromise the entire piece.
