A Clockwork Society | Fine Art Print

Born from a collaboration between myself and JDRC, A Clockwork Spectator (c. 1700’s) - 2018-23 explored the curious parallels between the social world of the early eighteenth century and the dystopian society imagined in A Clockwork Orange.

I have taken my original circular oil painting and reworked it into an entirely new piece A Clockwork Society, bringing these two worlds together once again. A contemporary city emerges in silhouette alongside an Old Master-inspired eighteenth-century landscape, while a velvet-clad dandy stands between them, caught somewhere between rebellion and conformity.

The cog covering his eye becomes both a symbol and a warning: different centuries, different fashions, different rules, yet the machinery of society continues to turn. What appears to be freedom may simply be another form of control, beautifully dressed and carefully constructed.

Drawing on the wit and social observation of The Spectator, alongside the darker dystopian world of A Clockwork Orange, this is a painting about individuality, conformity and the uncomfortable machinery that exists beneath respectable society.

For the rebels, the misfits and the gloriously non-conformist, if you’d rather march to the beat of your own drum than become another cog in the machine, this one’s for you.
