Anna and the Lion is the third painting in my Armchair Wanderlust series, though this journey was not one of distant lands but of unexpected artistic discovery. It began with The Muse by Jessie Burton, a novel that transported me to 1936 Spain and into the life of Olive Schloss, a young artist who painted in secret to defy societal expectations. Inspired by an old Spanish legend of Santa Rufina and Santa Justa - one sister cast into a well, the other to the lions - Olive creates a painting that surprises even herself!

After finishing the book, my own curiosity led me to the legend. Like Olive, I felt compelled to respond, to create my own interpretation of strength, fate, and artistry. Anna and the Lion is the result of that unexpected journey, a painting born not from physical travel but from the deep pull of storytelling, art, and the echoes of history.
