Tea, cake… and something a little more forbidding.

At first glance, this is a cosy domestic scene: two children eagerly await tea and cake while a curious dog sniffs beneath the table. But all is not as it seems. The children’s arsenic-green clothing hints at the darker truth: the tea is laced with poison.

Inspired by Mary Ann Cotton (1832–1873), Britain’s first female serial killer, Green Tea and Cake transforms Victorian domestic comfort into something deliciously disturbing. With its rich burgundy tones, hidden faces and unsettling symbolism, this painting explores trust, safety, deception and the lengths people will go to improve their lives.

Part beautiful, part macabre and completely unconventional, this is art with a story to tell.
