Radioactive

The idea for Radioactive emerged from two striking moments - finding a pair of safety glasses discarded in the gutter and watching the harrowing Chernobyl series, which chilled me to the bone. This painting captures the haunting legacy of a nuclear disaster through the reflective lenses of the girl's oversized goggles. In one lens, the nuclear power station burns into the night, its glow a symbol of devastation and invisible danger. Symbolism weaves through every detail. A Barn Swallow perches in her hair, a delicate yet tragic presence, one of the few species severely affected by radiation due to the high pigmentation in its feathers. A cherry earring dangles from her ear, its 24k gold leaf stem a quiet tribute to the farmers who unknowingly toiled in contaminated fields - the fruits of their labour, laced with unseen peril. Around her neck, a thorny tattoo tightens, a silent suffocation, a mark of suffering and resilience.

In the other lens, a serene dawn breaks over a misty countryside, a vision of the world as it should be, untouched, thriving, and full of “hope”.

Radioactive is both a warning and a reflection, a reminder of the fragile balance between human ambition and our responsibility of the land we call home.
