The Chinese Lantern Café

Part of my Beautifully Bleak series, The Chinese Lantern Café is inspired by the true story of Sonia Ramsay, a petite, vivacious bohemian who opened an oriental-themed café in Broadstairs, Kent in 1927. Whilst caring for her disabled husband after the First World War, Sonia employed Charles Robinson as his nurse. But Robinson became obsessed by Sonia and increasingly possessive and unstable after she rejected his advances. On the night Sonia planned to go dancing, she was brutally murdered inside the café. The following morning, her mother followed a trail of bloody footprints to discover the horrifying scene. Police found a bloodied hammer - the murder weapon. Robinson fled before attempting to take his own life by taking poison at North Foreland.

This is a painting for those drawn to work that reveals itself over time. At first it offers atmosphere, colour and intrigue; then its darker story begins to surface. The Chinese Lantern Café brings conversation, mystery and a touch of the uncanny to a room, an artwork that seduces with beauty but lingers because of its secrets.
