Birling Gap Study

Perched above the chalky cliffs of Birling Gap on a golden morning, I set to work on a birch wood panel primed with an undercoat of baby pink. The wind was so fierce that I couldn’t paint, so I treated it as a creative photoshoot. Back at the studio using my R&F Oil Sticks once again, I embraced the immediacy and looseness they invite. The memory of that captured moment, grass flowing like the ocean, the sky stretched wide and open, and the wind carrying the scent of salt and sunshine. This painting captures the freedom and energy of living in the moment, sunlight dancing on water, sheep grazing underneath a windswept tree and the sheer joy of painting outdoors in one of nature’s most dramatic settings.
